Images from the kick-off Sahil Bachao Rally

Some images from the kick-off Sahil Bachao rally held on Sunday 15th April at the Clifton beachfront. The rally was a huge success. Several hundred men women and children holding banners and paper boats marched down Beach Avenue from McDonalds to the Kinara Restaurant and back on the beach. Along the way they were joined by several groups of picnickers on the beach.

A cousin in the Bay area wrote: "I'll gladly sign the petition but if there is a McDonalds in Clifton then all is lost already."

My reply: "McDonald's is a total monstrosity. The DHA has already kicked out all the bandar-wallas and bhutta-walas and chai-walas that used to ply the beach - have instead put up genteel little 'kiosks' serving, what else, burgers and soft drinks. AND a huge mobile Pizza Hut. And floodlights under the gleam of which Karachi-walas cavort until all hours. But at least it is all public accessible.

"The bandar-walas etc protested when they were booted out a couple of years ago, and some people who are part of the Sahil Bachao coalition (Kauser S.K, for one) joined in their protest and tried to help them, but couldn't/didn't mobilise like they are doing now. I guess better late than never."
